Bill Tyler Announced as New Fire Chief
NOVATO, CA –Novato Fire District Board of Directors is pleased to announce Bill Tyler as Novato Fire District Fire Chief. He will begin his new role in the fire service starting January 29, 2018.
Novato Fire Chief Bill Tyler will have his official badge pinning ceremony on February 22, 2018 at 6:00 p.m.
Fire Chief Mark Heine states, “I have great confidence in Chief Tyler to lead this organization through all the times and events that lay ahead.”
Fire Chief Bill Tyler is an experienced service-driven leader who has demonstrated a strong history of successfully applying the vision, mission, values and guiding principles of the Novato Fire District for over 22 years.
A native Californian, Tyler began his fire service career in 1994 as a Firefighter Trainee with the Tamalpais Fire District. Tyler was hired as a full time professional Firefighter-Paramedic with the Novato Fire District in January of 1996.
Since then, he has promoted and held the ranks of Fire Inspector, Captain/Deputy Fire Marshal, and Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal. He holds a professional credential as a designated Chief Fire Officer from the Center of Public Safety Excellence, and is a certified Chief Officer through the California State Board of Fire Services. He completed his Paramedic training at the Stanford Pre-Hospital Paramedic Program in Palo Alto, and has a Bachelor’s degree in English from Cal State Hayward.
Chief Tyler is Novato’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Coordinator, and has also served as Logistics and Planning Section Chiefs in past EOC activations. Chief Tyler is currently serving on the Marin County Board of Supervisors’ Disaster Citizens’ Corps Council, and is Co-Chair of the Public Disaster Education and Preparedness Sub-Committee. He participates on two Marin County Special Operations Teams: He is a certified Hazardous Materials Specialist and a court qualified expert witness in cause and origin fire investigation.
Chief Tyler is active in the Novato community as a member of the Rotary Club of Novato Sunrise, as parent coordinator for the San Marin Robotics Club, as a veteran soccer coach for the Novato Youth Soccer Association, past Novato South Little League Board Member, and volunteer for the San Marin High School Holiday Tree Recycle Program, which helps fund Safe and Sober Grad Night activities. He received the Employee of the Year Award for the Novato Fire Protection District in 2004 and Ed Stark Achievement Award from the Novato Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program in 2009.
Bill lives in Novato and has been married for 19 years to his wife Marie, and together they have four children: three boys and one girl, ages 10 to 18.
