2009 Fire Chief Message

In its simplest form, the Novato Fire District is a government agency that provides fire and medical services. But your fire district is so much more than a collection of employees charged with an obligation to maintain a fire and life safety system.

The story of the Novato Fire Protection District is unique. It is a story of family, friends, faith in one another and the fire service. It is a story that sets us apart from any other fire department or district.

It is our people, who are highly committed and dedicated, that make a difference every day; whether it be a paramedic assisting a citizen in the field, an inspector ensuring fire and building codes are maintained, our public educator teaching our youth and leaders of tomorrow, or our administration staff, clerical staff, administrative and chief officers, who plan, prepare, and support all of our members.

Each year, we send numerous strike teams and several members to assist in Incident Management Teams throughout the state. We fight a few fires ourselves, structure and wildland, and are now the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), a cooperative endeavor with the City of Novato.

We respond to several thousand advanced life support calls, and over 5,000 alarms. We train diligently, with more than 14,000 hours of in-service training and over 2,100 hours of certificate classes. We perform hundreds of inspections and make countless public education contacts, while maintaining our leadership and commitment to our Marin County Urban Search and Rescue and Hazardous Material teams. We provide ambulance billing services for San Rafael Fire Department, Corte Madera Fire, Albany Fire, and we’ll soon be adding Piedmont Fire. We do all of this while maintaining the quality of life our citizens have grown to expect. Bottom line, we have made a positive difference in thousands of peoples’ lives.

What does the future hold? We’ve just hired four firefighters/paramedics, completed our Strategic Plan, Standards of Cover and are nearing the final phase of the Self Accreditation process; while maintaining our tradition of being one of the best trained, equipped, funded, and supported District by our Board of Directors and our Novato community.

In the final analysis it is the service we give to the citizens of Novato and the support the Novato citizen give us that make the Novato Fire District an exceptional organization.
