Fire Sprinkler System Contains Cooking Fire in Novato Apartment

NOVATO, CA — On March 31, 2025, at approximately 11:50 a.m., Novato Fire District units responded to the 1700 block of Marion Avenue for reports of a residential kitchen fire. The fire was quickly contained by a single activated sprinkler head and a maintenance worker using a fire extinguisher.

While enroute, crews were informed the fire had been extinguished. On arrival, firefighters confirmed a cooking fire had occurred, limited to the stove top, hood, and nearby cabinets.

Crews checked for fire extension, removed the range hood, and mitigated water damage in the affected apartment and the unit below. No injuries were reported.

Cooking remains the leading cause of home fires and injuries in the U.S. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports more than 170,000 home cooking fires each year. Residential sprinkler systems cut the risk of dying in a home fire by about 85% and greatly reduce property damage.

The Novato Fire District commends the maintenance worker for their quick action. This incident highlights the importance of having accessible, working fire extinguishers and regularly maintained sprinkler systems in residential buildings.
