Novato Fire District Fire Smart Demonstration Gardens

As a part of Novato Fire District’s ongoing effort to create a fire-adaptive community starting at the house-out, we installed two fire smart gardens at Station 63 and at our Administrative Building. The demonstration gardens also support our goal of conducting public outreach and educational events for residents to learn about home hardening and defensible space. These gardens are open to the public every day from sunrise to sunset.

Both gardens are located in public areas in front of Novato Fire buildings, so visitors and residents are encouraged to take the meandering path through the gardens to learn more about fire smart landscaping through interpretive signage. The gardens offer examples of fire smart principles that residents can use in their own gardens to create safer conditions for their home by minimizing ignition potential, while also creating a beautiful landscape that provides pollinator habitat and highlights California plants.
